Giftedness as a Life Experience: A Conversation with Jared

Room With A View Podcast | Hosted by Vanessa R. Wood

In the inaugural episode of Room With a View, host Vanessa Wood opens the archives of the International Gifted Consortium to explore the lived experiences of highly and profoundly gifted individuals.

Through first-person storytelling, this series connects decades of gifted education research with the authentic voices of gifted individuals, families, and educators.

In Episode 1, Vanessa speaks with Jared, a philosophy major at Connecticut College, whose personal reflections helped inspire the launch of this series. Jared shares a deeply introspective perspective on what it means to live with exceptional intellectual intensity and how giftedness shapes identity, meaning-making, and education.

Episode Overview

Jared describes giftedness as an all-encompassing life experience, influencing how he thinks, learns, and constructs meaning in the world. His intellectual curiosity spans subjects from metaphysics and quantum mechanics to philosophy and investing.

During the conversation, Jared reflects on:

  • discovering his exceptional giftedness later in life

  • the role of intellectual overexcitability in driving deep independent learning

  • the struggle of being misunderstood in traditional academic environments

  • the tension between independent intellectual pursuits and structured education

  • the challenges of ADHD and asynchronous development

  • how highly gifted individuals often construct deeply personal systems of meaning

This episode offers a powerful and humanizing perspective on the lived experience of giftedness—far beyond grades, test scores, or stereotypes.

Key Topics Discussed

Giftedness as Identity

Jared explains how giftedness permeates every aspect of his life, shaping his interests, motivations, and search for personal meaning.

Intellectual Overexcitability

The conversation explores the concept of overexcitabilities and how intense intellectual curiosity drives Jared to independently explore abstract and complex ideas.

Being Misunderstood in School

“My experience in school was terribly frustrating and painful.”

Despite strong intellectual ability, Jared describes a painful high school experience where classmates perceived him as unintelligent because traditional academic metrics did not capture his strengths.

ADHD and Asynchronous Development

Jared shares how learning he had ADHD helped explain the disconnect between his intellectual capabilities and academic performance.

Independent Intellectual Pursuits

Much of Jared’s learning occurs outside the classroom through deep independent study and writing.

Why This Episode Matters

Many people associate giftedness with high grades and academic success. However, this episode highlights a very different reality.

For many highly and profoundly gifted individuals, the educational system does not fully recognize or support their intellectual intensity, asynchronous development, or need for meaningful challenge.

Jared’s story sheds light on:

  • misunderstood gifted students

  • the complexity of intellectual overexcitability

  • the importance of recognizing diverse expressions of giftedness

  • the need for educational environments that nurture deep thinking and creativity

Giftedness, Psychomotor Overexcitability, and ADHD

Room With A View Podcast | Hosted by Vanessa R. Wood

In this episode of Room With A View, produced by the International Gifted Consortium, host Vanessa R. Woodcontinues her conversation with Jared about the lived experience of giftedness.

Jared shares his personal story of discovering an ADHD rating scale during his senior year of high school and realizing how many of the characteristics described—difficulty organizing tasks, feeling internally driven by constant mental activity, and struggling with routine academic structures—closely matched his own experiences.

However, these traits are not always indicators of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In highly and profoundly gifted individuals, similar behaviors may reflect psychomotor overexcitability, one of the five overexcitabilities described in the work of Kazimierz Dabrowski and his Theory of Positive Disintegration.

This episode explores how giftedness, intensity, and asynchronous development can sometimes resemble ADHD characteristics, leading to misunderstanding or misdiagnosis in educational and clinical settings.

Through Jared’s reflections, listeners gain insight into the complex relationship between gifted cognition, emotional intensity, and physical energy, and why awareness of overexcitabilities is essential for supporting highly and profoundly gifted individuals.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

• The similarities between gifted traits and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
• How psychomotor overexcitability appears in gifted individuals
• Why highly gifted students often struggle in traditional classrooms
• The connection between intellectual intensity and distractibility
• How asynchronous development affects organization and executive functioning
• Why gifted individuals may be misunderstood or misdiagnosed
• The importance of awareness in gifted education and psychological assessment

Why This Conversation Matters

Many educators, clinicians, and parents are unfamiliar with the concept of overexcitabilities, particularly psychomotor overexcitability.

Without this awareness, behaviors associated with gifted development may be interpreted solely through the lens of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

This episode highlights the importance of considering giftedness first, or at least alongside other developmental and behavioral frameworks, when supporting highly and profoundly gifted children, adolescents, and adults.

Through conversations like this, International Gifted Consortium aims to expand global understanding of gifted development and the lived experiences of gifted individuals.
